LINUX OR WINDOWS

CHOOSING LINUX OVER WINDOWS

Confused about whether to shift to Linux or not? Lets help you to clear your confusion.
If you are not quite a “techie” person and use computer for activities like playing games and surfing web, then windows might be just fine for you. But if you want to use your computer resources to their fullest and want some really buttery experience even in low-end PC, Linux might be the best option.

Let’s see why.

1. LIGHTER
The most important reason for choosing Linux over windows would be, Linux is an extremely “light” operating system. If you have ever tried to view the processing power and memory consumed using task manager, you would have noticed a huge amount of resources is eaten up by the system processes, leaving less power for other applications.

Its not the case for Linux. It uses minimal resources thus allowing other applications to use resources to their maximum capacity.
For example, Android Studio(a bit heavy software) takes around 1 to 2 min to finish indexing and build gradle in windows whereas it takes around 25 seconds in Linux on the same PC. (Configuration – i3 3.1ghz, 4 GB RAM )

2. IT’S FREE !!!
Yes, you read it right. Any Linux distribution is free and open-source. It also comes bundled with a lot of pre-installed tools like its own libre office in case of Ubuntu. Also most of the softwares for Linux can be downloaded and used free of cost.
In case of windows you have to pay quite a good amount for any version and also pay for MS. Office separately. The softwares for windows are also not mostly free and needs to be bought.

3. SECURE
Lets face it. Windows is prone to virus and malware attacks and windows defender is just not enough to prevent all the attacks.
In case of Linux, the amount of virus and malware is almost non-existent. Obviously, nothing is 100% secure, but the chances of being infected in Linux is almost ZERO and a strong password is just enough to secure the Linux OS.
Why? The reason is quite simple, almost 83% of the users use windows while just 1.7% of the users use Linux. So all the virus and malwares are developed for the majority, i.e. windows user.

4. BEST FOR PROGRAMMERS
Linux supports almost all of the major programming languages (Python, C/C++, Java, Perl, Ruby, etc.). Moreover, it offers a vast range of applications useful for programming purposes.
The Linux terminal is superior to use over Window’s command line for developers. You would find many libraries developed natively for Linux. Also, a lot of programmers point out that the package manager on Linux helps them get things done easily.
Interestingly, the ability of bash scripting is also one of the most compelling reasons why programmers prefer using Linux OS.
Linux also brings in native support for SSH, which would help you manage your servers quickly. You could include things like apt-get commands which further makes Linux one of the most popular choices of the programmers.

5. SEVERAL DISTRIBUTIONS
Ever been to an ice-cream parlour? Aren’t there flavours for everyone’s taste? Linux also provides distribution according to your requirements.
FUN FACT : Linux has almost 600 different distributions with close to 500 out of them in active development.
There are Linux distributions for hackers, there are Linux distributions for programmers, there are Linux distributions for extremely old computers. There is a Linux for everyone.

6. RELIABILITY
Windows, as we know it, becomes sluggish day after day. You will want to re-install Windows after a while when you encounter crashes or slowdowns on your system.
If you are using Linux, you will not have to worry about re-installing it just to experience a faster and a smoother system. Linux helps your system run smooth for a longer period (in fact, much longer!).Also, with Windows, you will have to adapt to a habit where you keep on rebooting the system for just about everything.
If you just installed software, reboot! If you recently uninstalled software, reboot! If you just installed a Windows update, reboot! If the system seems to slow down, reboot!Windows is certainly more user friendly. The GUI is surely more convenient and writing commands in the However, in the case of Linux, you will not have to reboot for the situations mentioned above. You can comfortably continue with your work, and Linux will not bother you.
Another fact that proves Linux to be reliable are the web servers. You could observe that most of the Internet giants like Google and Facebook run on Linux. Even almost all of the supercomputers run on Linux. So, Why isn’t Windows preferred over Linux? It is because Linux is far more reliable than Windows OS. Period.

After all these advantages, some might want to still stick to windows. WHY??

Windows is certainly more user friendly. The GUI is surely more convenient and writing commands in the terminal might not be for everyone, specially if you are not enough “techie“.
Though most popular softwares have their Linux distribution, still there are some softwares which are not available for linux.
Example.Adobe is not available for Linux thus not allowing you to run your favourite photo editing software, PHOTOSHOP!
For structure Designers, Linux is surely not the best choice. As the best 3D modelling software, AUTOCAD is not supported on linux
